Worth a look

The problems a spellchecker cannot see

A thesis that says nothing

"This essay will discuss the effects of social media" is not a thesis, it is a table of contents. It announces a topic without taking a position, and an essay built on one has nothing to argue. The structure read finds the sentence doing that job and tells you whether it commits to anything.

Paragraphs with two jobs

The most common structural fault in student writing is a paragraph that starts on one idea and finishes on another. It reads fine sentence by sentence, which is exactly why it survives proofreading. Naming what each paragraph does makes the ones doing two things obvious.

Sentences carrying too much

Past about thirty words a reader stops holding the whole sentence and starts skimming. Those sentences are flagged live and you can highlight them in your text to see how many there are. Usually it is the same three paragraphs every time.

Where this fits with the other tools

Work in this order and each step stays useful. Reordering it means fixing commas in paragraphs you later delete.

  1. 1

    Write and restructure here

Get the argument and the shape right first. This is where the grade actually lives.

  2. 2

    Grade it

See how it scores against a rubric and what to fix before you polish anything.

  3. 3

    Check it

Now fix the spelling, grammar and style, and see whether it reads as AI written.

Common questions

How is this different from the essay checker?+

The checker fixes sentences. This builds the essay. It tells you what each paragraph is doing, whether your thesis takes a real position, and where a reader would lose the thread. A perfectly proofread essay with no argument still gets a bad grade, and this is the tool that catches that.

Does it check my writing while I type?+

The counts, readability, long sentences, passive voice and repeated words all update as you write. They run entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent anywhere and there is no delay. The structure read is a button, because that one actually reads your argument and it would be wasteful to fire on every keystroke.

What reading level should an essay be?+

Most school and undergraduate essays sit around grade 10 to 14. Higher is not better. If yours reads at grade 18, that usually means sentences carrying three ideas each rather than sophisticated thinking, and markers notice the difference.

Is passive voice always wrong?+

No, and anyone who tells you that is overselling a rule of thumb. In science writing it is often the right choice, because the method matters more than who performed it. It is flagged so you can see how much you are using, not so you delete every instance.

Will my work be saved?+

Your draft is kept in your own browser, so a refresh or a closed tab does not lose it, and your recent essays are in the history menu. Nothing is stored on a server, which also means we cannot recover it for you if you clear your browser data.
